Seeking Mural Repair Coordinator

Olympia Artspace Alliance (OAA) is an all-volunteer organization established in 2011 to preserve, develop, and advocate for affordable live, work, and exhibition space for artists.

The 2023 Downtown Mural Improvement Project is a new collaboration between the Parking Business and Improvement Area (PBIA) and the Olympia Artspace Alliance. The goal of this project is to fund the much-needed restoration and protection of some of downtown’s existing murals. OAA will be working with the artist throughout the process, and will be responsible for reporting to the PBIA board about the work.

Position Purpose:

We seek an artist (or artists) with demonstrated skills to identify, color-match, and restore painted murals in the downtown core. We hope to identify and restore, at a minimum, six murals. This is a creative position and there is flexibility in the approach to restoration. We hope to complete this contract in 2023.

This contract position will work independently with the support and coordination of OAA leadership and board.

Compensation:

Billable rate for the hired artist's work is $45 per/hour with a total project budget of $6,500, including the cost of materials and supplies (which may be invoiced separately). Hourly compensation includes time for planning, for organization, site prep, and other related costs (such as retrieving materials). Mileage is not reimbursable under this contract.

The artist (or artists) will be responsible for keeping itemized receipts for all purchased materials, and a log of their time (receipts must be provided for compensation, along with a log sheet of hours worked on the project).

What we hope to accomplish with this project:

The City of Olympia maintains a GIS walking tour map of all the murals in downtown Olympia (you can find that link here). Many of our downtown murals have been damaged and are in need of repair. There is a running list that the Arts Commission has gathered of murals that would benefit from touch-up painting. We recognize that repairing murals is challenging and we are open to your ideas and suggestions about how to best approach the work.

The role of the Mural Repair Coordinator is to:

  • Identify murals that would most benefit from repair (this project is in partnership with the Olympia PBIA, and again, they have done some of this work already)

  • Create a proposal for murals to repair, with estimate and timeline. Share with OAA Leadership

  • Contact building owners if on private walls to share schedule with them

  • Complete approved tasks (painting murals)

  • Take before and after photos of the murals

  • Track project expenses and monitor budget

  • Conclude work in 2023 (we aim to conclude this project by September 2023, but recognize there may be unforeseen issues that delay work, such as inclement weather, air quality, etc.)

  • Create a final written report to share with the Olympia PBIA (OAA will help you accomplish this)

How to apply:

Applicants should email the following to storefronts@olympiaartspace.org:

  • letter of interest

  • CV or resume

  • three professional references

  • three relevant work samples

  • outline of how they would accomplish the work

Preference will be given to local artists. You do not need to have a business license or business insurance to apply for this opportunity, but please note that this work will incur a 1099 and the contractor will be responsible for all taxes and fees.

APPLICATION CLOSED
